New blast by the gizmo duo Adelaide News (AU) 4 january 1979
Kevin Godley and Lol Creme might be having second thoughts about their 1976 departure from British Group 10cc following the success of Bloody Tourists. The duo have just released their second album since the departure and like the first they don't quite pull it off. Their latest effort, L (Polygram), pursues the duo's experiment with their gizmo invention which dominated their debut album. L is written and produced entirely by Godley and Creme, with Godley handling percussion and lending vocals and Creme the guitar work, piano and Gizmo. The key track on the album probably is the opening number, The Sporting Life. Sounding very much like Queen on their Night At The Opera, Creme and Godley share the vocals with some haunting xylophone from the latter. The slower Art School Canteen is the other highlight track, with Lol Creme providing some delightful acoustic guitar it really stands out as the most 10cc like song in the package. The biting lyrics have a blast at the need to maintain an image. Let me tell you what it's all about The album won't appeal to the newly collected 10cc hordes — post Bloody Tourists
— but those who were into early cc work and followed Godley and Creme on their last
journey will receive their second shot with open arms.
