10cc
SOUND STATESIDE

Record Mirror, circa 1975
Author Unknown

With the success of their No. one single, I'm Not In Love, hot on their heels, 10cc are busy planning a trip to America, tentatively fixed for October. They hope to fit in as many major cities as they can during a five week period.

This will be their fourth visit to the States, and when the 208 Mirror reporter spoke to Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman, it was obvious that they were looking forward to the trip immensely.

"The first time we went to America we were virtually unknown," says Eric, "and we spent most of our time doing promotional work and interviews with various radio stations. Some of our British hits had been quite successful in the American charts, but it was really a case of getting the 10cc sound established out there, and crossing our fingers that they liked what they heard!

"Our main worry was that they wouldn't understand the music," continued Eric. "We tend to write rather satirical songs that take quite a bit of listening to before you get the meaning."

The American fans obviously knew a good sound when they heard one, and it wasn't long before their records were securing a top spot in the charts with each release. Does this mean that the band might consider following in the footsteps of many top British groups and live in America permanently?

"Not at all," says Graham. "We still have a lot to do in Britain for many years to come, so for the time being it will be limited to tours and promotional visits."

Back on the home front, the boys are currently writing new songs for an album which will be released by Christmas or the new year. Says Eric, "We always write in pairs, though not always the same two. One of us will come up with an idea for a song, suggest it to another member of the band, and if they like it it develops from there." So, out of all the fantastic songs they've ever written, which one is the band's favourite? "I'm Not In Love!" they chorused!
