10cc

BBC TV Top of the Pops Annual 1979 p. 16
Edited by Ken Irwin

In the autumn of 1976 the four-man group known for some years as 10cc split up. Kevin Godley and Lol Creme left the band to develop a 'new sound', leaving Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman to carry on as a duo.

Their first record together, The Things We Do For Love, shot them immediately into the charts and established Stewart and Gouldman as continuing 10cc hit-makers. They had a worldwide hit with that song, which earned them a gold disc in America.

Eric and Graham went on from there to release their first album, Deceptive Bends, which went high in the charts, along with their succeeding single Good Morning Judge.

However as 10cc are not only recording artists, but also like to perform live, Eric and Graham set about setting up a new band in 1977. They enrolled the services of Paul Burgess on drums; Tony O'Malley, keyboards and vocals; Stuart Tosh, drums and vocals; and Rick Fenn, guitar and vocals.

Graham Gouldman (bass guitar and vocalist) says: "The whole thing was like starting a new band again, but with a tremendous head start."

And Eric Stewart (lead guitar, piano and vocals) says: "Setting up a new group gave us both a tremendously exciting buzz."
