Liner Notes |
Some groups only sound their best on record by [sic] 10cc sound great whether
recording in a studio or playing live. This most professional and gifted band take
their place among Britain's finest rock acts of the '70s. They came together in their
home town of Manchester back in '72. Lol Creme and Kevin Godley having been together at
art school and in various groups, with Eric Stewart, and Graham Gouldman of The Mindbenders.
Gouldman had previously been working as a prolific and highly successful songwriter -
having written many hits for such artists as The Yardbirds, The Hollies, Herman's Hermits
and Jeff Beck. When The Mindbenders split up in 1968, Gouldman went to America to further
his songwriting career, while Eric Stewart was instrumental in setting up Strawberry Studios
in Stockport. He invited Lol and Kevin to work with him - the result, Neanderthal Man,
which the three released under the name of Hotlegs. This went to Number 2 in the U.K.
Charts and brought about a nationwide tour with The Moody Blues.
Graham Gouldman returned from America and the four went to Strawberry Studios filling
in time between writing, with production and session work. Whilst experimenting, Godley
and Creme came up with a song entitled 'Donna' - a parody of U.S. hits of the late '50s.
The group took the song to Jonathan King. He suggested the name 10cc, the song was released
on his newly formed U.K. label and within weeks it was Number 2 in the British Charts in
September '72.
The following year two more pop parodies were released - 'Rubber Bullets' which went
to Number 1 and remained in the charts for 15 weeks and the equally brilliant 'Dean and I',
also a Top 10 hit which was in the charts for 8 weeks. The same year saw the release of
their debut album 10cc - the sleeve being designed by Creme and Godley.
All four members of the band have written songs together and individually - their
unique style of witty lyric writing being easily recognised. The album, 'The Original
Soundtrack', was released in 1974 [sic] from which came the renown chart-topping single
'I'M NOT IN LOVE'. This classic number written by Eric Stewart [and Gouldman] was a
Number 1 smash on both sides of the Atlantic. Many hits followed including
'ART FOR ARTSAKE' [sic], 'WALL STREET SHUFFLE' [actually an earlier hit] and
'I'M MANDY FLY ME' all included on this album.
Creme and Godley left the group in the Autumn of '76 to pursue other interests.
Four new recruits joined to keep the group going and a further string of hits followed
including 'THINGS WE DO FOR LOVE' and 'GOOD MORNING JUDGE'.
